Safe Travels: How to Prepare Your Family for an International Vacation
Are you looking forward to traveling abroad this summer, taking a cruise to the Caribbean, or simply visiting our neighbor nations to the north or south?
Planning an international getaway with the family is exciting. But before you start packing the swimsuits and passports, it’s smart to take a few extra steps to protect your plans, health, and wallet.
Here are some tips to ensure your vacation runs smoothly from takeoff to touchdown.
1. Consider Travel Insurance
One of the most important yet often overlooked preparations is buying travel insurance. A good policy can protect you from unexpected trip cancellations, medical emergencies abroad, and even lost luggage. Many policies offer 24/7 support and can be tailored to your needs. Without it, a simple flight delay or overseas illness can turn into a major financial hit.
2. Don’t Rely Solely on Credit Cards
While credit cards are widely accepted, having cash in U.S. dollars and local currency is smart. Some small businesses, taxis, or remote locations may not accept credit cards, or your bank could flag foreign transactions and temporarily freeze your account. Exchange a portion of your money in advance or use a trusted ATM at your destination. Before you travel, notify your bank and credit card company of your travel dates
3. Bring Multiple Forms of Identification
In addition to your passport, bring backups. For kids, a birth certificate can be helpful, especially if traveling internationally with only one parent. Carry a copy of your health insurance card and another government-issued ID, if possible. Even something like a wholesale membership card with a photo can serve as a secondary ID in a pinch. Additionally, it is a smart idea to make copies of passports and store them separately from the originals
4. Read the Fine Print on Rental Cars
If you plan to rent a car abroad, check your personal automobile policy carefully. Most personal auto insurance policies won’t cover rental car damage outside of North America, especially when it comes to loss of use or rental income to the car company. In many cases, buying the extra coverage from the rental company is a smart call for peace of mind.
5. Pack the Right Power Adapters and Charging Gear
Many countries use different voltages and plug types. Bring a universal adapter and make sure your devices can handle voltage differences. Consider a small power strip if you have multiple devices, as hotels often have limited outlets.
With a little preparation, your international family vacation can be memorable for all the right reasons.
